Whereas, The continued decline in state support for higher education has proven the need for effective student representation and advocacy;
Whereas, Education Code §76060.5 authorized the students at each college to establish a student representation fee for the purposes of providing “for the support of governmental affairs representatives who may be stating their positions and viewpoints before city, county, and district governments, and before offices and agencies of the state government”; and
Whereas, The Student Senate for California Community Colleges has identified 50 colleges that have not implemented the student representation fee, leaving many local senates unable to provide the necessary resources to support effective student representation and advocacy efforts;
Whereas, The Student Senate was directed in resolution 7.02 F07 to “educate and assist…colleges in successfully passing and implementing the student representation fee”;
Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges adopt the updated paper The Student Representation Fee: A Guide to Implementation on Your Campus; and
Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges disseminate the guide to local senates, especially to those colleges without the student representation fee, and make it available on its website.
