Whereas, the issues related to the roles of student government advisors have not yet been adequately addressed, and the overarching problems have remained if not gotten worse;
Whereas, The Student Senate for California Community Colleges has adopted resolution, F09 12.02, to define the role of a student government advisor, which is set to expire this year due to Eternal Sunset;
Whereas, associated student organizations ought to be as autonomous as possible in order for them to adequately represent the students of the campus regarding their budget, their rights, and through the formal structures of consultation in shared governance;
Resolved, that the Student Senate for California Community Colleges navigate a formal consultation process with appropriate system partners to define the role of the advisor within the education code in a way that clearly establishes the autonomy of student governments;
Resolved, that the Student Senate for California Community Colleges navigate a formal consultation process with appropriate system partners to allow the SG to nominate their own advisor, formalize the role of the advisor within the Education Code, require student input and involvement in the hiring process for a SG advisor and/or remove the requirement of having an advisor;
Resolved, that the Student Senate for California Community Colleges create a committee composed of appointed members of the Student Senate Council and at least five (5) Delegates from Associated Student Organizations who will be appointed immediately upon the adoption of this
Resolution by the President of the SSCCC with the directive to compose a document similar to CCCSAA’s STATEMENT OF PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS AND COMPETENCIES which clearly delineates the expected role of a student government advisor.(1)
