Spring 2008
Committee:
President
Whereas, Given the severity of the State's fiscal crisis, it is incumbent upon the Legislature to examine each program individually, and develop a spending plan which ultimately grows, not shrinks, the economy;
Whereas, The Community colleges yield a three-to-one return on investment to the future of California and foreclosing opportunity for 53,000 community college students makes no sense during these lean economic times; and
Whereas, The California Legislature needs a policy that allows traditional college-age students and unemployed workers the opportunity to enroll in college, provides them assistance that they currently need to succeed, and the Governor's budget proposal does neither;
Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges reject Governor Schwarzenegger’s proposed budget cuts because these cuts will severely impact the
administration and execution of all Community Colleges in California;
Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges reject the Legislative Analyst Office’s proposal to raise student fees because it will severely impact community college attendance and reduce revenues as the last raise in fees resulted in a loss of approximately 300,000 students; and
Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges urge Governor Schwarzenegger, the Legislative Analyst Office and California State Assembly and Senate
Representatives to review any future budget cuts with extreme prudence in order to maintain and ensure the growth of community college resources in the future.
