Whereas, There is currently no obligation for professors to drop students who have not shown up to a single class session during the drop/add period. Professors are given the option to drop students during the drop/add period, but are not required to drop students.

Whereas, Students who attend multiple colleges as a result of low class availability, a bad enrollment date, etc., might forget they signed up for a class at a certain school and obtain a failing grade as a result of never attending class.

Whereas, Students sign up for classes and then are unable to attend college or decide to take a semester off. For whatever reason, these students (especially incoming freshman) forget to drop these classes, or are unaware that failure to drop these classes will result in a failing grade. This mistake causes students to get “W” or “F” grades, even though they never attended class.

Resolved, The SSCCC encourage colleges to establish a policy, not just an option, to drop students who have not attended a single class session during the drop/add period and have failed to inform their professor as to why they were absent. This will guarantee that students who have not attended class get dropped and students that wish to add the class get in.

Resolved, The SSCCC encourage colleges to create a policy to drop students who have not shown up to a single class session during the drop/add period, so that students are dropped before the “drop without a W” deadline. This policy shall solely ensure that students get dropped from the class during the add/drop period, it would not dictate at what point during the add/drop period students are dropped.

Resolved, The SSCCC works on trying to change the Ed Code in order to implement a “Drop without a “W” Policy.”
