Fall 2007
Committee:
President
Whereas, 58,000 gallons of bunker fuel oil spilled into the San Francisco bay, as far east as Richmond and west as the Farallon Islands, after a single-hull tanker crashed into the bay bridge;
Whereas, Sea transit has been stifled to a near stand still, directly affecting the global economy and local industry, including the livelihoods of thousands of families depending on the bay area fisheries;
Whereas, Hundreds of species are coping with a terribly disrupted ecosystem now and for decades to come; and
Whereas, Early reports indicate that insufficient policy and inadequate adherence to disaster response guidelines have failed to mitigate the disaster, prevent it from occurring in the first place, and protect the Bay from such a catastrophe;
Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community College support and encourages student involvement, whether in education, support in clean-up efforts, or becoming an activist for policy reform; and
Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community College draft a letter to California State Assembly and Senate representatives and the Governor’s office, encouraging swift movement in the clean-up effort and rehabilitation of our precious San Francisco Bay.
