Whereas, California’s community college system is one of the largest educational systems in the United States, if not the world, serving approximately 2.8-Million students and California’s community college system is currently facing an incredibly severe budget shortfall, forcing the system to review and remove any and all potential causes of waste and inappropriate use of funding and resources;
Whereas, Community colleges, in general, have seen what some call “an epidemic rise” in the number of students who enter the system wholly unprepared for college level courses, due to a variety of reasons, students who are unprepared for college cause a considerable added strain on system resources;
Whereas, It is the intent and focus of the Student Senate for California Community Colleges to advocate on behalf of students and the community college system, and against any issue that causes a lack of efficiency or effectiveness, no matter where the cause of the issue may originate; it is imperative that an effective, thoughtful and comprehensive dialogue begin between the “K-12” educational systems and the community college system to help find potential solutions to any issue or obstacle standing in the path of student preparedness and accomplishment;
Whereas, such a dialogue must be mindful and sympathetic to the needs and resources of all the systems involved and it must be realized that change to the systems will be slow to come, and must be methodical in progress;
Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges shall create and convene a standing committee to facilitate and ongoing dialogue between itself, as the representative body of the students in the California community college system, leaders of the California community college system, and those leaders, administrators, faculty, staff and students of the various “K-12” educational systems;
Resolved, That the name of this standing committee shall be the “Early Education Action and Effectiveness” (EEAE) committee, and that the charge of this committee shall be to ethically and effectively further the continuance of a dialogue between each of the involved educational stakeholders, and that such dialogue is designed to further the efforts of all involved towards making all students entering the community college system properly prepared and guided towards success;
Resolved, That the “Early Education Action and Effectiveness” committee shall seek input and guidance from the office of the Chancellor of California Community Colleges, the Community College League of California, and others, to ensure that the discussions are focused, on task and in the best interests of the community college system, as well as the students of the “K-12” systems; and
Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges shall incorporate into the by-laws the creation of this committee forthwith.
