WHEREAS, the Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC) is the recognized student body for the two million, one hundred thousand students of the California community college system;
WHEREAS, over 5,600 homes were destroyed as a result of wild fires in 2017 and over 20,000 people were displaced during the fires [1] [2]
WHEREAS, being the victim of a natural disaster can have impacts on a student’s grades and or finances [3]
WHEREAS, many of the California Community Colleges do not currently have systems in place to assist their students affected by natural disasters
RESOLVED, The SSCCC advocate that the Chancellor’s office encourage community college districts to adopt policies and procedures that allow students affected by these types of disasters to have an extended opportunity to drop classes with a refund, and without an entry on their transcripts
