Whereas, 70% of all California college students have enrolled in California community colleges, a vital component of the public higher education system in our state;

Whereas, Despite low fees, California community college students face rising costs in (including a 28% increase in expenses between 2000 and 2005, with an inflation rate of 16%) pursing their academic goals, which leaves most students with unmet financial needs;

Whereas, Too few California community college students, who intend to complete a certificate, degree or transfer program, actually accomplish their goal within six years largely due to increased financial need; and

Whereas, The “Getting to Graduation” Campaign focuses on increasing use of available financial aid by California community college students;

Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges endorse the “Getting to Graduation” Campaign and similar programs designed to assist California community college students financially;

Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges encourage its constituent groups to actively participate in the “Getting to Graduation” Campaign as well as similar programs; and

Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges work with groups or agencies such as the California Public Interest Research Group (CalPIRG) on the “Getting to Graduation” Campaign and similar campaigns in an effort to increase financial aid for California community college students. Status
Completed. The SSCCC has supported the campaign and continues to work with CalPIRG on efforts to increase financial aid. Supporting additional financial aid campaigns is ongoing.
