WHEREAS, Most campuses have a significant number of students, staff, & faculty who are nursing mothers & therefore need a clean place to breastfeed or breast pump in private;

WHEREAS, students wishes to be supportive of breastfeeding as the preferred method for infants for nutrition and nurturing. Many students have campus employment and, under U.S. law, employers must provide a lactation room for a new mother to use for pumping breast milk [1];

WHEREAS, “WIC mothers are strongly encouraged to breastfeed their infants unless there is a medical reason not to. All WIC staff are trained to promote breastfeeding and provide the necessary support new breastfeeding mothers and infants need for success. WIC State and local agencies are required by WIC Program regulations to create policies and procedures to ensure breastfeeding support and assistance is provided throughout the prenatal and postpartum period, particularly when the mother is most likely to need assistance” [2]; and

WHEREAS, For a lactation room, the minimum requirements are: Door that locks, Electrical outlet for plugging in a breast pump, Good lighting and ventilation, Comfortable chair, Countertop or table for breast pump and supplies, "Occupied" sign for the door, Wastebasket, chemical cleaner for surfaces, chemical cleaner for hands, routine daily Maintenance [3]; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC) works with the Chancellor's Office to devise and distribute a poll tabulating and analyzing the data from all 114 CA Community Colleges campuses as to lactation needs and current support/services; and

RESOLVED, That the SSCCC urges state, regional, local and campus administrations to support campus lactation services by providing space, equipment, supplies, working with WIC and other lactation support services, seeking grants, etc.
