WHEREAS, not every California community college student attends a school with a
comprehensive system to support mental health;

WHEREAS, California adults ages 18-44 have on average 3.8 poor mental health days a year;

WHEREAS, students of color at American colleges and universities are almost twice as likely
not to seek care when they feel depressed or anxious; and

WHEREAS, nearly 40% of college students suffer from depression and 61% of college students
suffer from overwhelming anxiety;

RESOLVED, that the SSCCC advocate that the Chancellor’s office launch an annual mental
health awareness week in collaboration with an organization focused on mental health such as
the JED Foundation.
