Whereas, trans*-identified individuals face unique mental health challenges, in addition to widespread discrimination and harassment, which have contributed to a lifetime suicide attempt rate of forty-one percent (41%) among American individuals who identify as transgender, as found by the National Transgender Discrimination Survey (2010) conducted by the National Center for Transgender Equality
and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force;
Whereas, trans*-identified individuals between the ages of 18 to 24 are particularly susceptible to mental health issues, including depression and anxiety, that may lead to suicide or other self-injurious behaviors;
Whereas, specialized gender identity therapists who abide by the Standards of Care set by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health are uniquely trained and skilled in addressing the mental health needs of trans*-identified individuals; and
Whereas, the Student Senate for California Community Colleges is committed to promoting and advancing the rights and equity of all groups – as represented by the Equity and Diversity Committee and the adoption of resolutions 7.01 F09, “Equity for All Policy”, 7.02 F09, “LGBT Anti-Harassment Policy”, and 7.04 F09, “Gender Identity Equality” – as well as to ensuring the health and safety of all students at each of California's community colleges;
Resolved, that the Student Senate for California Community Colleges shall advocate and encourage that community colleges research and implement gender identity training programs for at least one of any current counselors conducting therapy sessions at, or through, a community college; and
