Whereas, The Student Senate for California Community Colleges recognizes public education is a right and not a privilege and that the promise of free or affordable public higher education for all is one of the greatest democratic achievements in California's history;

Whereas, the California Legislature has approved, and the governor has signed $400 million in cuts to the California Community College system;

Whereas, California Community Colleges are at risk for further cuts; and

Whereas, California is the only major oil and natural gas-producing state in the country without an oil extraction fee;

Resolved, That the Student Senate of California Community Colleges endorse an oil and/or natural gas extraction fee to fund higher education initiative; and

Resolved, That Student Senate of California Community Colleges pledge to take action to participate in the campaign for the initiative, commits itself to inform the general populace about the initiative, and to include the collection of signatures necessary for placing said initiative on the ballot.
