Whereas, The Puente Program has been a great influence on student success and access since its formation in 1981 and has improved the college-going rate of tens of thousands of California's educationally underrepresented students;

Whereas, The Puente Project mission is to increase the number of educationally disadvantaged students who enroll in colleges and universities earn college degrees, and return to the community as mentors and leaders to future generations;

Whereas, According to the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office website the retention rate for Latino and Hispanic Students was only 81.12 % in Spring 2008; and

Whereas, The Student Senate for California Community Colleges continues to support projects that assist historically underrepresented students in achieving their educational goals, such as the Umoja program;

Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges work with the Puente Program to share information about the program to all local student and academic senates within the California community colleges;

Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community offer its assistance to the leadership of the Puente Program to support its work, in order to make more students aware of the program in all the 110 community colleges in California; and
Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges work with various statewide organizations of students, faculty, administrators and staff to communicate information about the Puente Program including its success rates.
Status
Completed. The Student Senate raised awareness of the importance of the Puente Program during state budget discussions.
