Whereas, cigarette butts are consistently reported as the most common form of litter worldwide, accounting for 195 million pounds of discarded trash each year in the United States (Castelluccio, 2014),

Whereas, only an estimated 10 percent of cigarette butts are actually disposed of in ash trays (Castelluccio. 2014),

Whereas, cigarette butts are made from 95% cellulose acetate and can be converted into a high-­performing material that could be integrated into computers, handheld devices, electrical vehicles and wind turbines to store energy as well as make other carbon based materials (Institute of Physics. 2014),

Whereas, the State of California and many CCCDs have sustainability programs and initiatives to improve the current state of our environment and to make positive and sustainable change an objective on our campuses,

Resolved, that the SSCCC implement a cigarette butt recycling effort by having recycling receptacles placed in strategic locations around each campus and setting up a recycling partnership through a company like TerraCycle or the company itself,

Resolved, that if a campus does not allow the smoking of cigarettes that cigarette recycling receptacles be placed around the perimeter of the campus as the campus deems necessary,

Resolved, that each campus identify a coordinator for said efforts,

Resolved, that there be adequate signage posted, as the campus deems acceptable, in order to educate the campus community on said efforts.
