Whereas, Giving more high school students the opportunity to enroll in community college courses could provide the state and its students with a plethora of benefits, such as alleviating high school dropout rates, increasing transfer rates, decreasing the time necessary to complete a student’s educational objectives, and strengthening the preparation level of students to successfully complete for-credit, college level courses; and,
Whereas, Concurrent enrollment partnerships permits community college and high school districts to create pathways of transparent, sequenced coursework that invigorates a student’s ability to transition to for-credit, collegiate coursework that can facilitate their attainment of an associate degree, career technical education credential or certificate, or fast-track their transfer to a University of California or California State University campus; and,
Whereas, To facilitate the establishment of these substantial concurrent enrollment partnerships, California needs to remove fiscal penalties and policy barriers that deter concurrent enrollment opportunities; and,
Whereas, AB 288, the College & Career Access Pathways Act, reduces some of the state’s key barriers around concurrent enrollment. It predominantly does this by allowing community college districts and high school schools to enter in College and Career Access Pathways partnerships, authorizing high school students to take up to 15 units instead of the current 11, and allowing college courses to be offered at high school campuses.
Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community College endorses AB 288 by writing a letter of support to its authors.
Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges encourages all regions and local associated student organizations to pass resolutions in support of AB 288.
Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges strongly urges all students to show their support of AB 288 by advocating on its behalf by coordinating legislative visits with their local state representatives and through their participation at legislative hearings.
