Whereas, A recent study from the California Acceleration Project asserts that 70-90 percent of community college students are underprepared for college and placed in remedial courses (Research and Planning Group, 2014). Furthermore, according to the 2014 Student Success Scorecard, only an alarming 40.5 percent manage to transfer or complete a certificate degree within six years (Harris, 2014, p. 8); and,
Whereas, National studies show that current teaching methodologies for remedial coursework focus on rote memorization, while lacking in the areas of conceptual and intuitive ideas (Complete College; Bettinger 2008). To compound those issues, subdividing subject matter is essential to current remediation models, thereby losing a significant amount of context for the subject (Grubb, 2010). The Research and Planning Group (2014) for California Community Colleges posits that accelerated models of remediation have spurred prominent completion gains and increased understanding among community college students- regardless of socioeconomic status; and,
Whereas, The data was collected and analyzed in a study that the Research and Planning Group (2014) conducted on 16 community colleges piloting remediation models as part of the California Acceleration Project. In these colleges, the student’s odds of completing a transferable college-level course were 2.3 greater in accelerated English courses and 4.5 times higher in accelerated math courses (p. 2); and,
Whereas, AB 770 allows community college districts to apply for grants from the Chancellor’s Office that will be used to expand or implement innovative remediation models that utilizes similar accelerated coursework. These models will ensure that basic skills students complete college-level English and math courses within three semester of initial enrollment, contextualize remedial instruction to a student’s program of study, and provide student support services outside of the classroom such as tutoring or supplemental instruction (Irwin, 2015); and,
Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community College endorses AB 770 by writing a letter of support to its authors.
Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges encourages all regions and local associated student organizations to pass resolutions in support of AB 770.
Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges strongly urges all students to show their support of AB 770 by advocating on its behalf by coordinating legislative visits with their local state representatives and through their participation at legislative hearings.
