WHEREAS, The Student Senate for Calfiornia Community Colleges will continue to provide support on behalf of its students for expansive accessibility to pursue its mission by ensuring stances and support for programs and legislation that removes barriers and ensures access and success [1];
WHEREAS, Community college students when asked if they have experienced food insecurity, 47% responded with they had, half of the respondents went on to say that they “worried whether my food would run out before I got money to buy more”, and 50% answered that they “couldn’t afford to eat balanced meals” [2];
WHEREAS, As more students are being enrolled in the CalFresh program, many find it difficult to take advantage of those benefits due to lack of access to food retailers that accept electronic benefits transfer (EBT) on college campuses [3]; and
WHEREAS, Assemblymember Eloise Gomez Reyes (D-San Bernardino) introduced AB-2033 this year [4], which would require at least one convenience or grocery store located on each campus throughout California community colleges to accept electronic benefits transfer (EBT); now therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges make AB2033 a legislative priority; and
RESOLVED; That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges advocate for the passage of AB2033 (Reyes, 2024) aimed to eliminate food insecurity as a barrier that many students face when obtaining an education.
