WHEREAS, The California Community Colleges is the largest system of higher education in the nation, with 2.1 million students attending 115 colleges;
WHEREAS, the funding formula for California Community Colleges depends on the persistence, retention, graduation, and transferability of each enrolled student;
WHEREAS, developing a vibrant student life culture on each California Community College is vital to ensure the sanctity of students’ success and the success of the student government;
WHEREAS, curricular and co-curricular events, program, and services are needed to assist students to stay on their path and to ensure their learning should be funded by California Community Colleges’ perspective student governments; and
WHEREAS, while costs to fund these events, program, and services are needed and the student government budgets are not healthy to support these learning initiatives;
RESOLVED, that the Student Senate for California Community Colleges advocate for a required student activities fee at each California Community College;
RESOLVED, that the funds obtained from this fee be used for cultivating student life on California Community College campuses;
RESOLVED, that this fee may be paid upon registration of classes and be structured similarly to the student health fee and administered by the student government;
RESOLVED, that the student activities fee be determined by each individual California Community College at a minimum of 5 dollars and no more than 20 dollars per academic semester (Fall, Spring, Summer).
