Fall 2007
Committee:
President
Whereas, California’s community college student organizations have increasingly suffered from overly-involved advisors;

Whereas, Advisors too often take on a larger role in overseeing student organization activities than is necessary;

Whereas, Advisors have forgotten the true scope of their role with student organizations; and

Whereas, The Student Senate Relations with Local Senates Committee conducted a survey in September/October 2007 and found that 24.1% of survey respondents stated that their biggest concern with their local associated students (AS) was the relationship between the AS and administration/faculty;

Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community College work with California Community Colleges Student Affairs Association to form a joint task force of student representatives and advisors to develop a handbook that guides and instructs advisors and students in their respective roles in overseeing student organizations;

Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges remind them to guide students in understanding and interpreting district policy, club constitutions and bylaws, and other guiding documents in order to support student control of their own activities; and

Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges remind advisors that student-created and student-run clubs should be left in the hands of the students.
