Spring 2013
Committee:
External Affairs
Whereas, Over the last couple of years, veterans have been driven into more expensive private college programs because they could not qualify for in-state tuition benefits and the G.I. Bill will no longer cover out-of-state tuition and fees;
Whereas, Unfortunately, this also prohibited many veterans from utilizing their Post 9/11 G.I. Bill at an institution of higher education of their choice. This is a frustrating problem for veterans as they find it difficult to access the higher education benefits they have earned; and
Whereas, It is important to understand veterans live where they are stationed or discharged, often in states where they don’t have residency.
Therefore, their home of record should not adversely affect their ability to access earned educational benefits;
Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges strongly supports House Resolution 357 authored by Representative Jeff Miller of Florida, the G.I. Bill Tuition Fairness Act of 2013, which would require public institutions of higher education eligible for GI Bill education benefits to give Veterans in-state tuition rates, regardless of their state residency status; and
Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges strongly supports any state or federal legislation that would grant veterans better opportunities to receiving in-state tuition rates.
